AVOIDING COMMON PITFALLS ON THE PATH TO BECOMING A SKILLED MEDIUM

Old Photos - Avoiding Common Pitfalls on the Path to Becoming a Skilled Medium

Mediumship and providing medium readings for people is a deeply personal and spiritual journey that requires dedication, humility, and skill. While it can be incredibly rewarding and satisfying, it’s also a field where mistakes, often unnoticed, can impact both the medium and those seeking guidance from them. This article explores some key issues in mediumship, highlights the importance of proper training, and offers practical advice for those on this path, hopefully allowing you to avoid the common pitfalls on your path to becoming the best medium you can be.

The Challenges of Finding the Right Teacher

Mediumship training is essential. A skilled teacher can provide guidance, structure, feedback and insight that help mediums develop their abilities. I have had some wonderful teachers (and some not-so-wonderful teachers as well) over the years who helped me grow tremendously in my mediumship practice.

Yet, finding the right mentor can be a real challenge. Not all teachers share the same values or approaches, and some methods leave much to be desired. As with anything in mediumship, take what resonates with you and trash the rest.

One such incident has stuck with me to this day. A teacher I admire for her knowledge and skill shocked me during a group reading session I watched on livestream. While she had taught me a great deal, the session leaned heavily on vague, generalized statements - what I would call "fluff." It lacked the evidential depth that sets skilled mediums apart.

The Problem with Group Readings

Group readings, sometimes called Platform Readings, especially those performed on large stages or live social media, often become more about performance than genuine connection.

Statements like “Your loved one passed suddenly” or “You still hold onto an object they cherished” are common in these settings. While such lines may resonate with many, they are often too broad to be considered true mediumship.

This pattern, seen in many public readings, raises questions: Are these mediums genuinely connecting with Spirit, or are they performing for applause and likes?

For those in grief, these generalizations can offer false comfort rather than true healing.

The Importance of Evidential Mediumship

Evidential mediumship stands out because it offers specific, meaningful details that leave no doubt about the connection to Spirit.

Here is a little example from my own experience:

I was reading for a client when her uncle came through. Suddenly, I saw images of an elderly man dancing and jiving in my mind’s eye. At first, it seemed odd, but I shared it anyway. My client smiled and began to tear up.

She explained, “My uncle was a terrible dancer but he always used any excuse to dance, especially if he was happy.”

Her uncle’s message was clear: he was there, celebrating with happiness. This type of precise, personal detail is the essence of evidential mediumship. It’s what gives readings their power and authenticity.

The Responsibility of a Medium

Mediumship comes with great responsibility. Yes, just like Spider-Man. Clients often come to us in times of grief, pain, loss or confusion. They deserve genuine, thoughtful connections, not scripts or guesses.

If you are serious about pursuing this path, here are a few principles to consider:

  • Train Continuously: Developing your “Clairs” (clairvoyance, clairaudience, etc.) is a lifelong commitment. Practice daily to sharpen your senses.

  • Be Specific: Avoid vague or generalized statements. Share the unique details spirit gives you.

  • Keep Sessions Focused: Most meaningful messages come through in the first 20 minutes of a session. Avoid padding readings with unnecessary chatter.

  • Respect Your Client and Spirit: Approach each reading with humility, sincerity, and love. Avoid exploiting emotions or charging exorbitant fees.

  • Stay Grounded: Don’t rely solely on props like tarot cards or crystals. Instead, trust your intuition and Spirit’s guidance.

What Makes a Great Medium Reading?

A successful mediumship reading should be genuine, concise, and rooted in love and respect.

Here is a quick checklist for mediums:

  • Leave your ego at the door.

  • Trust Spirit and your intuition.

  • Keep readings to 30 minutes where possible.

  • Charge fairly and avoid overbooking yourself.

  • Avoid social media “live” readings - they often feel impersonal and lack the sacredness of private sessions.

  • Never read when you are feeling tired, unwell or out of balance.

  • Always approach your work with love and gratitude.

Some Final Thoughts

Mediumship is an incredibly beautiful gift, but it requires commitment, humility, and practice. Proper training is crucial, and so is staying true to the essence of this work: providing healing and connection for those who need it most.

For those on this path, remember that your role is to be the voice of Spirit. Work with integrity, listen with an open heart and trust the process. When done with love and respect, mediumship can truly transform lives.
